New Everton relegation verdict emerges amid fresh setback

Everton won’t go down but do find themselves in a relegation battle, according to former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Frank Lampard’s side are now only above the bottom three on goal difference after they suffered an eighth defeat in nine league games against Wolves on Sunday.

Following the embarrassing 5-0 defeat at Tottenham six days earlier, the Toffees boss would have been looking for a big response from his players, who’ve only tasted victory once under his guidance.

But it only ended up being the latest in a long line of poor performances of late, with Everton mustering up just two shots on target throughout the 90 minutes. One of those should have resulted in the opening goal, but Richarlison couldn’t beat Jose Sa at his near post, while the same player found the side netting after the interval.

And they were punished early in the second period, when Ruben Neves’ pinpoint cross was guided home by Conor Coady for the only goal of the game.

Everton’s misery was compounded late on when Jojo Kenny collected two bookings in quick succession and will now miss the crucial clash with Newcastle on Thursday through suspension.

Lampard’s team do have games in hand on all of the sides around them, but their situation is becoming more concerning with every passing week.

When asked whether Everton could end up losing their ever-present status as a Premier League club, Palmer told GIVEMESPORT: “I can’t see them going down, but I said recently that anyone up to Brentford are involved in a relegation battle.”
