New England Patriots: Bill Belichick addresses potential QB controversy of Zappe & Jones

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has remained coy over talk about what will happen with the quarterback situation.

The New England Patriots last year looked as if they were finally ready to move away from the shadow of Tom Brady and into a new age at the quarterback position, with 2021 1st round draft pick Mac Jones having arguably one of the better rookie seasons that recent quarterbacks have had.

He threw for 3,801 yards, completed 67.6% of his passes and threw for 22 touchdowns against 13 interceptions and managed to guide the Patriots to the playoffs in his first season. The numbers may not have been impressive when put next to the superstars in the league, but for a rookie taking over one of the most poisoned of chalices in football, it certainly wasn’t something to be sniffed at.

This season however, it has been a totally different story, as during his first three games of the season, he went 1-2 as a starter, and threw just 2 touchdowns against 5 interceptions, before succumbing to an ankle injury that has kept him out of the last two games.

That is where Bailey Zappe comes in. The Patriots had initially turned to backup Brian Hoyer to take over for their fourth game of the season against the Green Bay Packers, however after he suffered a concussion and was ruled out for the foreseeable future, the rookie Zappe took over and has done a rather reasonable job in their absences.

In relief against the Packers and during his start against the Detroit Lions this past Sunday, he has completed 75% of his passes and thrown for 2 touchdowns against just 1 interception. Leading some to believe that the Patriots might not miss too much of a beat over the next few weeks if Jones remains out.
