New cold weather alert for five UK regions to come into force tomorrow

A new weather alert will come into force tomorrow covering five regions of the UK - including the North West.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued a yellow cold health alert which will be in place from 6pm on Tuesday to 9am on Friday this week. The alert covers the North East, North West, Yorkshire and The Humber, East Midlands and the West Midlands.

The alert warns that the forecasted weather is "likely to have minor impacts on health and social care services". Impacts may include "increased use of healthcare services by vulnerable people" and a "greater risk to life of vulnerable people", the UKHSA said.

It comes as the UK continues to feel the impact of Storm Bert, which arrived early on Saturday morning bringing some heavy snow and rain and gusty winds to some areas. During the weekend, some places saw more than 130mm of rainfall in 24 hours and wind gust of over 75 miles per hour.

More than 160 flood warnings remained in place across the country on Monday morning. The storm is “only just slowly pulling away” from the UK today, meaning an “unsettled start to the day”, according to the forecast.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: “The day ahead is generally a mixture of sunny spells and showers.”

According to the Met Office, StormBert will finally clear form the far northeast early on Tuesday. However, a return to colder conditions is expected by the middle of the week.

In Manchester, temperatures could drop below zero by the early hours of Wednesday morning. Overnight frost and fog patches are likely, according to the Met Office.
