New coach Vidmar wants same again after Melbourne City down Sydney

New Melbourne City coach Aurelio Vidmar is hoping his side's performance in their 2-0 win over Sydney FC on Friday can provide an early template for his team as the A-League champions look to overcome their poor start to the domestic season.

Vidmar was appointed during the week following the sacking of Rado Vidosic, who was removed from his position after City were handed a 6-0 thrashing by Adelaide United last weekend.

That loss was City's second in a row in the league, but goals from Steven Ugarkovic and Jamie Maclaren earned Vidmar victory in his first game in charge to set his side up for the visit of Thailand's Buriram United in the Asian Champions League.

"My intention is to keep playing the way we played tonight and keep improving on that, whether it's Wednesday against Buriram in the Champions League or the following week against Macarthur," Vidmar said.

"It's going to be the same. We can't deviate from that."

The win lifted City off the bottom of the early A-League standings and leaves Sydney in last place in the 12 team set-up with no points from their opening three games.

While City have made a poor start domestically, they host Buriram sitting on top of Group H in the Asian Champions League, three points clear of Japan's Ventforet Kofu. Only the group winners are guaranteed to progress to the next round.

Due to the demands of their domestic and continental commitments, City's schedule means Vidmar will be unable to prepare as he would like in his continued efforts to improve performances.

"I would prefer a bit more training time, especially being new, to work on more things," he said. "But on the other side the players don't want to train, they just want to play.
