New Chelsea man on Barcelona radar as trusted source reveals his ‘priority’ is to leave

Fabrizio Romano has revealed Marcos Alonso is the latest Chelsea player to become a summer target for Barcelona.

The Spanish giants are hoping to land Andreas Christensen. They should be able to get the Dane on a free transfer as his contract expires this summer.

Barcelona also held hopes of signing captain Cesar Azpilicueta for no transfer fee. However, the 32-year-old’s contract extension clause triggered once he reached a certain number of appearances this season.

Due to this, Azpilicueta’s Chelsea contract now runs until June 2023. Nevertheless, Barcelona are confident of paying a small fee to take him back to Spain ahead next term.

Alonso is also a target for Xavi at the Nou Camp, as per Romano. On April 30, the transfer guru tweeted: ‘Barcelona are working on Marcos Alonso as a new candidate for [the] left-back position.

‘He’s one of three/four options on the list now considered by the board. Barca are well informed on Marcos, confirmed.’

And Romano has since come back with an update on the seven-time Spain international. He claims Alonso will show ‘respect’ to Chelsea due to his successful spell at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso has helped the Blues win several trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League, since joining in August 2016.

However, the defender’s ‘priority’ is to return to Spain at the end of the season – and Barca can offer him an ideal solution.

They have apparently begun ‘direct contact’ with Alonso, his agent and Chelsea officials. Xavi’s side want to determine whether he would be open to moving and how much Chelsea would ask for.

As Alonso’s contract runs out next year, the Blues would not be able to command a huge fee.
