New Arsenal signing Matt Turner sends warning to Aaron Ramsdale

Matt Turner is arriving at Arsenal in the summer from New England Revolution expected to be the second choice goalkeeper, but the American has warned Aaron Ramsdale that he intends to challenge him for the gloves.

The Gunners have agreed a deal for the USA international, who will make the switch to north London for a fee of around £5m, which could increase with various add-ons.

The 27-year-old’s arrival looks certain to spell the end of the line for Bernd Leno at the Emirates, with the German linked with a move to Newcastle United or a return to the Bundesliga.

Turner will start the next Premier League season as understudy for Ramsdale, but has made it clear that he is not happy to just accept that position and will push the Englishman for his place.

‘When I got my first chance with the national team, it was only as a No. 3,’ said Turner, via the Evening Standard.

‘No one ever really took me seriously, so I’m not going over there just to collect a cheque and ride off into the sunset.

‘I’m going to push myself, I’m going to push Aaron and continue to help him get better and help myself get better.’

Turner has only been a regular in MLS since 2018 and did not pick up his first international cap for America until last year, so a move to Arsenal would not have seemed likely at all in the recent past.

However, he says he has always been confident in his skills and is relishing the challenge in the Premier League.
