"Never Take Anything For Granted": Sunil Gavaskar Lashes Out At India Star Over "Disappointing" Dismissal

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was disappointed with Dhruv Jurel after the young wicketkeeper-batter threw his wicket in the first innings of the fifth Test against England in Dharamsala. Jurel, who won the player of the match award in the last game, walked in to bat at No. 7 after India lost the wicket of debutant batter Devdutt Padikkal. Jurel's stay lasted just 24 balls as he holed out to Ben Duckett at long-on. As he was walking back to the dressing room after his dismissal, Jurel kept staring at his bat with a look of disbelief on his face.

Gavaskar warned Jurel not to take things for granted, saying that it was a needless shot from the youngster, especially with India in command of the proceedings.

"Jurel will be very disappointed at that shot. Yes, that's what happened. To get it at the bottom of the bat. You've just come out to bat. You've batted only 24 deliveries. You can see that there is Ravindra Jadeja batting at the other end. There's a fielder there at deep. You did not have to play that shot. No wonder Jurel is looking at his bat very, very upset with himself. And he should be," Gavaskar said on commentary.

"Always be mindful of what happened in Hyderabad. He can look as much as he wants to. Yes. The learning curve. Never take anything for granted. Not in Test cricket. It does not make any sense," the legendary batter added.

For the unversed, Jurel had scored a match-winning 90 in the first innings of the 4th Test in Ranchi. His efforts had earned him huge praise from fans and the experts, including Gavaskar, who had compared him to MS Dhoni.

"Watching the presence of mind of Dhruv Jurel makes me think he's the next MS Dhoni in the making," Gavaskar said on Sports 18 during commentary.
