Neighbour of pensioner who wheeled dead daughter around town says he still has nightmares
A neighbour has been left traumatised with 'nightmares' after living next to a woman who concealed her daughter's corpse for over a year and was later seen wheeling it through a town centre.
The resident claims he repeatedly reported a "death stench" from the adjoining flat but authorities failed to act.
Joan Kathleen Turnell, 77 at the time, was intercepted by the police pushing the decomposing remains of her daughter, Tracey, in a wheelchair on November 7, 2023. Despite reports, one local said he witnessed officials "carry the body" from the ground-floor flat in Whitehouse Mews, Walthamstow.
Kiri, 60, recounted the haunting experience: "I still having nightmares and flashbacks of seeing the body" while labelling the flat as a "s*** hole."
An inquest revealed Joan suffered from prolonged grief disorder and a brain tumour, contributing to her decision to keep her deceased daughter's body close by in the flat for an extended period.
Upon discovery with the remains, Joan reportedly lamented to the officers: "Why can't they just leave us alone? We have been fine and I have been looking after her."
Due to the advanced state of decay, pathologists were unable to determine Tracey's cause of death; she had several physical ailments, including a curved spine and deformed arms. Joan is now detained under the Mental Health Act.
Residents have expressed frustration with their housing association, LandQ, as they claim their repeated alerts about a disturbing smell were ignored for months. Speaking to the Daily Star, a neighbour named Kiri narrated his experience. He said: "I asked the caretaker, 'What's that smell? What's that rotting smell? '. I kept complaining about the death stench, no one did anything."
