“Needs to move on” – Journalist drops “big summer” exit claim involving 6 ft 2 Liverpool ace

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez ‘needs to move on’ in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 24-year-old has struggled for game time this season and has been linked with a switch away from Anfield in recent months as a result of his limited opportunities.

Gomez became one of the most well-respected young centre-backs in the Premier League after forming a formidable partnership alongside Virgil van Dijk following his arrival from Southampton.

However, ankle injuries kept the England international out of the Champions League final against Real Madrid in 2018 completely before limiting him to a substitute’s role in the showpiece event a year later.

But Gomez – who is valued at £22.5m – bounced back from those disappointments in impressive fashion, racking up 43 appearances in all competitions throughout 2019/20 as Liverpool cruised to their maiden Premier League title.

Cruelly, though, another major injury setback followed for the 6 foot 2 ace as he picked up a serious knee problem in November 2020, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

And Gomez has found it impossible to work his way back into Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI since, with the arrival of former RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate pushing him down the pecking order.

In the current campaign, Gomez has been awarded just one Premier League start and has received only 640 minutes of action across all competitions, highlighting his now peripheral role.

With the 2022 Qatar World Cup taking place this winter, O’Rourke believes Gomez may be forced to seek pastures new in the summer if he wants to make Gareth Southgate’s final squad.
