NatWest announces closure of 43 banks across UK - full list of locations

NatWest has announced that it will close 43 bank branches across the country as it continues to move towards an online-orientated service.

The UK's second-biggest lender said the vast majority of its retail banking services can be done online, while also being much quicker and easier than heading to a physical branch. Despite that large portion of locations closing, only six jobs are believed to be put at risk.

Most branch staff will likely be offered the opportunity to take up a role in a different branch or another part of the business. The bank also said it will contact its vulnerable customer to provide support following the announcement.

The branch on High Street in Cheadle is the only one in Greater Manchester which will close.

"As with many industries, most of our customers are shifting to mobile and online banking because it is faster and easier for people to manage their financial lives," a NatWest spokesperson said. "We understand and recognise that digital solutions aren’t right for everyone or every situation, and that when we close branches we have to make sure that no-one is left behind.

"We take our responsibility seriously to support the people who face challenges in moving online, so we are investing to provide them with support and alternatives that work for them.”

It comes after several high street banks said customers are opting to use mobile banking over going to physical branches. NatWest said average counter transactions shrunk by nearly two-thirds in two years.
