Nathan Jones delivers brutally honest verdict following Luton’s thrashing at Fulham

Luton Town boss Nathan Jones admitted their 7-0 defeat at Fulham was the lowest point in his career, as he praised the Cottagers for the way they played.

The Hatters actually had a reasonable start against the league leaders but they fell behind in the 29th minute to a fine Tom Cairney strike, and that opened the floodgates.

In the end, Jones’ men fell to an embarrassing loss and the boss told Luton Today that it was a hard one to take, although he rallied the players ahead of the big game against Reading this weekend.

“It’s a real tough day, real tough game to watch. I haven’t felt like that in my career before if I’m honest, but they’re the best team in the league, congratulations to them.

“It boils down to one giant, mammoth, unbelievable game and we’d have all taken that at the beginning of the season. So let’s look forward to that rather than dwell on a performance that was a poor performance, as they were good, but we weren’t as aggressive as we are, we didn’t defend our box as well, and in the end we felt a bit sorry for ourselves.”

Despite the loss, Luton know a win against Reading at Kenilworth Road will secure them a play-off place.

The verdict

These are good comments from Jones as he doesn’t hide from the fact that it was a humiliating evening for the team but they must forget about it as they are still in a fantastic position.

As he also mentioned, the injuries have been a real problem for Luton, so you have to have real sympathy for the boss in how they have been impacted at a crucial period.

But, there’s still lots to play for and if Jones’ men pick up the three points they need next week then this will be forgotten, with Luton then just three games away from the Premier League, which is incredible and
