Nate Diaz rules out third Conor McGregor fight with retirement decision

UFC legend Nate Diaz has explained how he plans to retire from combat sports - but not before he secures a fight with Dustin Poirier first.

Diaz currently boasts a 20-13 Mixed Martial Arts record but hasn't stepped foot in the octagon ever since his defeat by unanimous decision at UFC 263 against Leon Edwards in June of last year.

The 36-year-old's current UFC contract has just one fight left and Diaz has made little secret of who he wants his next opponent to be.

Poirier enjoys a better record than Diaz, with the 33-year-old Louisiana-native winning 28 bouts and losing just seven across his MMA career.

The pair have long-been locked in a public war of words and were even meant to face off back in 2018 at New York's Madison Square Garden but the bout never materialised.

However, Diaz is doing his part in trying to revive it after calling on UFC boss Dana White to organise the fight.

Speaking to TMZ Sports on Saturday, Diaz said: "I would like to fight Dustin Poirier. Like now. Like I’ve been trying to. If there’s any mix-up it’s him, and them, and the game.

"I want the fight now. What’s up Dana White? Let’s get this retirement fight cracking so I can get out of this fight game. I’m done with it."

The mention of a "retirement fight" all but ends any chance of a third fight against Conor McGregor.

Diaz was pressed on how confident he is that he could beat the former interim lightweight champion, to which he claimed: "He ain’t doing s*** to me. I’ll tell ya that much."

Poirier seems to share the enthusiasm over a meeting with Diaz and said as much while talking to The MMA Hour.

"When I’ve been laying down thinking about fights, nothing gets me excited — unless Nate Diaz wants to fight," Poirier explained.

"If he wants
