Nani criticises Manchester United squad as he defends Bruno Fernandes
Former Old Trafford favourite Nani says Bruno Fernandes is not to blame for Manchester United’s poor start to the season.
The midfielder’s status as club captain has recently been questioned by some, including former Reds skipper Roy Keane who said the 29-year-old is not up to the task. Some have questioned his in-game mannerisms, pointing to his hefty tackles and yellow card in the closing stages of Sunday’s Manchester derby defeat.
Gary Neville says Fernandes' constant chattering to officials is not helping his cause and suggested Erik ten Hag was wrong to give him the captaincy in the first place, albeit both he and Keane highlighted the technical qualities Fernandes possesses.

The Portuguese playmaker took over the armband from Harry Maguire full-time just over three months ago having worn it for most of last season when his predecessor was benched. Nani believes the heat on countryman Fernandes needs to be turned down given his displays since being officially handed the role.
He mooted that the fault lies elsewhere with other players not living up to the captain’s levels. Nani told B24: “Manchester United have great players. We have Bruno Fernandes. If Bruno Fernandes wasn’t playing well, I’d criticise him too.
“But, for example, the sacrifice and effort he puts into the game, he does it. We see it. He works hard, gives his all and contributes. It’s just that many others don’t keep up with him.”
Fernandes has two goals and three assists so far this season, meaning he has the joint-most goal contributions at the club this season alongside Casemiro, who has four goals and
