Nabil Fekir tussle to recommence as Newcastle learn rivals for Real Betis star

Reports claim Newcastle United have rekindled their interest in Real Betis forward Nabil Fekir and could battle Arsenal for his signature this summer.

The Magpies pulled off a stunning safety act over the second half of the season. They finished in 11th spot when relegation seemed likely in December last year. Eddie Howe replaced Steve Bruce, brought in a few new faces in January and they ended up with 49 points.

The challenge now is to try and operate at the other end of the standings on a consistent basis. The Saudi-backed takeover means the Tynesiders will have funds available to compete in the market.

And Fekir is a player they have been linked with in the past. The France international was on the St James’ Park radar back in the winter window but remained in Spain.

Last October, the former Lyon star confessed that he was happy at Betis and unconcerned with rumours about his future. And he inked a new deal in January, signing on at Estadio Benito Villamarin until June 2026.

Now the campaign has concluded, it is inevitable the rumour mill will begin to turn once again regarding his future. And the Sunday Mirror are reporting that Newcastle are set to make a renewed effort to sign him in the off-season.

Howe will have his list of targets and Fekir is reportedly a priority for the former Bournemouth chief.

The north-east outfit can now afford to pay big wages to their stars, therefore giving them more chance in the market.

They may well end up as a side playing regularly in Europe but there will be no European football in 2022-2023. Fekir would be playing in the Europa League if he stayed with his present LaLiga employers.
