Leeds United supporters could turn against Jesse Marsch and the Elland Road hierarchy if fans’ favourite Kalvin Phillips is allowed to leave the Whites at the end of the season, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.
Marsch was appointed as the Yorkshire giants’ head coach at the end of last month, just 24 hours on from Marcelo Bielsa’s sacking, but he may have a tough task on his hands when it comes to keeping Phillips at the club.
It appears Aston Villa are set to test Leeds’ resolve as The Times have revealed Steven Gerrard’s side are prepared to pay £60million to seal Phillips’ arrival from Elland Road.
The report suggests the Midlands outfit are the frontrunners to prise the 19-cap England international away from his boyhood club, with an ‘enormous salary’ set to be on the table after Phillips was identified as a key target.
It comes after West Ham United saw a £50million bid rejected during the final days of the January transfer window, but the Hammers are reportedly expected to return with a fresh proposal at the end of the season.
Four Premier League rivals could be in the hunt for Phillips’ signature ahead of the 2022/23 campaign getting underway as it has previously been claimed that Liverpool and Manchester United are set to battle it out for the 26-year-old.
Leeds are in a strong negotiating position as Phillips’ £38,000-per-week contract is not due to expire until the summer of 2024.
