Alexander Buttner has played in the Netherlands, England, Russia, Belgium, and the United States, but in his own words, he is 'back home' and playing football where his career started.

Buttner was born in Doetinchem, a small Dutch city with a population of around 60,000, and he returned home to represent its football team, De Graafschap, two years ago.

De Graafschap are in the hunt for promotion to the Eredivisie and Buttner has started every league game he's been available for this season. At 35 years old, he is a leader in the dressing room and hopeful of helping his hometown club secure promotion to the top flight.

Buttner is settled and enjoying his football in the winter of his career. He has a little boy with his pregnant partner and a girl will be added to their family in two months.

He achieved his dream of having a career as a professional footballer, but taking a quick glance at his social media will tell you which club he is most proud of playing for.

Buttner signed for Manchester United in the summer of 2012, meaning he joined in the same year as Sir Alex Ferguson lifted his final Premier League title and announced his retirement.

"Normally you play FIFA with these kinds of players, so it was the greatest time of my life," Buttner, speaking to the Manchester Evening News after a De Graafschap training session, said when asked about playing alongside Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney.

"Robin van Persie signed in the same summer as me and I was happy he was there, so I could speak Dutch with him and it was great to play with these kind of big stars.
