'My flat is mouldy, but the council keeps fobbing me off'

A 21-year-old man claims he has been ‘fobbed off’ in his bid to get mould removed from his Leigh council flat because he is young and several weeks behind on his rent. Jobless Ryan Clorley said he has made repeated complaints over the mould on the walls of the bedroom, bathroom and doors, but nothing was done to irradicate the problem at the Sunningdale Grove, Higher Fold, home.

“They just keep fobbing me off,” he said. “I think it’s because I’m young and I’m behind on the rent.

“I’ve had a few personal problems problems since I worked at McDonald’s and as a labourer on a building site. The council repair people said there was nothing more they could do, but I don’t understand why they think people should have to live like this.”

Wigan council say they have already tried to treat the problem and plan to send someone back to Mr Clorley's home.]

But, images from inside the property show the extent of the mould problem. A black mould appears to have spread onto his curtains and the interior doors of his home.

The upper sections of walls and ceiling of the 21-year-old's bedroom are also mouldy, and he claims the council has not dealt with the issue and is 'fobbing him off'.

However, Kathryn Perry, assistant director for housing services at Wigan council, said that 'initial antifungal treatment' had been carried out and more was scheduled.
