'My dad was rushed to hospital with chest pains and waited in A&E for 10 hours after his blood tests were lost'

A grandad who rushed to hospital with chest pains says he was left waiting in A&E for 10 hours after his blood tests were 'lost'. The 79-year-old was told that he would have to wait a further four hours for his blood to be taken again, if he hoped to find out the cause of the frightening pains, claims the furious patient.

Ron Phelan and his family say they now 'have no faith in the NHS', after the dad-of-two and grandad-of-two was left sat in the waiting room all day on March 23. The ordeal began after Ron called his GP with concerns about chest pains, having previously needed specialist care due to complications with his heart.

The GP instructed Ron to go to Manchester Royal Infirmary's A&E urgently to get checked out. When he arrived and was triaged at around noon, Ron says he was given a note that read 'immediate ECG' - but says that test was not completed until around three hours later.

"Half-an-hour after that, they took my blood to do tests. The place was hammered, there were at least 60 people there I'd say," Ron told the Manchester Evening News .

"People were queuing up to come in the building and queuing up to be triaged. The nurse said my results would be back in an hour-and-a-half max. I was still there eight hours later."

Ron asked a staff member at reception if his blood test results had come back from the lab. Some of the results had returned, the others hadn't, the patient says he was told.

"The person at the desk told me I'd have to go back to the waiting room, another two hours went by again, it was around 10pm by now," continued Ron.
