Murder detectives given more time to quiz teenager after 'kind' man killed following traffic light altercation

Detectives leading a murder investigation after a man was killed following an 'altercation' at a set of traffic lights in south Manchester have been granted more time to quiz the suspect.

Sadiq Al-lami was assaulted on Kingsway, in Parrs Wood, Didsbury, in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday (January 23). The 30-year-old was rushed to hospital from the scene but tragically died a short time later.

An investigation was launched by Greater Manchester Police and an 18-year-old man was arrested. In an update issued this afternoon, a spokesperson for the force said the suspect's time in custody has now been extended until Friday to give detectives more time to question him.

Usually arrested suspects can only remain in custody for 24 hours if they are not charged. However, special extensions are granted in serious cases like suspected murders.

Police said after the incident that Mr Al-lami and the suspect were believed to have been travelling in separate vehicles down Kingsway before reaching a set of traffic lights. There, an 'altercation' occurred, and the victim was attacked.

The Manchester Evening News understands he was found with stab wounds following the attack. Following his death, Mr Al-lami's family said he 'touched the hearts of everyone that he met'.

In a statement issued through police, his loved ones said: "Sadiq's warmth and love touched the hearts of everyone that he met. His love and laughter were contagious, and he was always full of life. Sadiq will be greatly missed and will never be forgotten."
