'Mum had gutting reaction to my gender reveal – it's taken shine off pregnancy'

Some couples have preferences when they're expecting a baby.

They could be more keen to have a girl than they are to have a boy – or vice versa.

But it's not often that grandparents wade in with strong opinions. And if they do, it can get a little bit awkward.

That's what happened for one expecting mother, who was upset when her mum was "visibly disappointed" at her gender reveal. The granny went as far to say the result was a "shame", which really put a dampener on the pregnancy.

Explaining the uncomfortable situation on Mumsnet, the mum-to-be wrote: "Just found out we're having a boy and we're very excited so told my mum and she was visibly disappointed. [She was] saying 'I imagined you to have a daughter', she then went on to say there's something very special about having a daughter and a mum/daughter bond, and 'maybe you'll get one next time'.

"She now keeps saying every time the baby is mentioned how strange it feels that I'm having a boy and that she keeps picturing a girl."

To add to the awkardness, the woman's mum also keeps looking at dresses in shops and "dragging herself away" as she reminds herself that her grandchild won't be a girl.

The mum-to-be continued: "The last straw is how she keeps looking at all the lovely dresses in the shops and has to drag herself away reminding herself it's a boy. She's really taken the shine off this pregnancy and I'm starting to feel really angry and avoid the subject.

"I have told her I'm excited to be having a boy, I'm wondering if she's trying to relive having me through my baby or why is she finding it so strange that my baby is a little boy."

The thread attracted a lot of attention on Mumsnet – and many said they were "furious" on the pregnant woman's behalf.
