Mum baffled at £5 found in her letterbox – then learns 'scary' reason it's there

Imagine coming home to find a crisp £5 note poking out of your letterbox.

It's not every day that you get a surprise like this, and while finding a bit of spare change on the pavement can make your day, discovering money in your own home is quite another thing. This was exactly what happened to one mum, who returned home to an unexpected fiver waiting for her at the door.

Ali Smith was puzzled to see the banknote without explanation, initially clueless about how it ended up there or the reason behind it. However, after uncovering the "scary" truth, she took to social media to share the story.

In a TikTok video, Ali recounted: "I've just come into the porch to find a £5 note posted through the letterbox. No envelope, no nothing. I'm thinking, 'Who on Earth is posting £5 through the letterbox?'"

The mystery remained unsolved until later that day when a walk with her dog led to a revelation. Something her son had placed in the window prompted the seemingly random act.

She explained further in the video: "[My son] did some Halloween crafts yesterday. He put the picture in the window, with this sign [that says] 'If I scared you, please leave five pounds'."

Ali was left in stitches once she realised why the cash had been posted through her letterbox. The stranger had clearly wanted to play along with her son's cheeky sign and had given him the £5 he asked for.

Commenters on the post found the exchange equally as funny, with many praising Ali's son for his "genius" sign. Some called him an "entrepreneur in the making", while others said they would have been charmed into leaving the little man a fiver, too.
