MotoGP Mugello: Ogden unhurt but ‘overall really happy’

Scott Ogden looked to be on for another strong showing on the VisionTrack Honda until a start line technical ended his Moto3 Italian GP before it had begun.

Having qualified directly for Q2 on Saturday with the 11th fastest time in the lightweight free practice at Mugello, Ogden completed his second day in Italy 14th overall despite the ever changing weather conditions.

Unfortunately, that was as far as the Brit got after a problem on the grid as the lights released the pack meant he was unable to pull away as planned, getting tagged by a rider from behind in the process and ending his Tuscan race early.

“Overall I’m really happy with the weekend,” Ogden commented after the dust settled on Sunday. “I had a good feeling throughout the practice sessions. After FP1 we were mainly in the top 12 positions so we had really good pace.

“I’m happy to avoid any serious injuries so I can fully focus on Catalunya next weekend where I know I can get a strong result.”

Josh Whatley’s debut Italian adventure saw the rookie, one of only two with no prior knowledge at the 5.2km layout, progress from 27th on the grid to cross the line 21st. Gaining valuable experience at the start of a packed schedule which sees the 16-year-old compete in four races over five weeks.

“I really enjoyed this weekend,” Whatley confirmed. “I felt like I made another step forward with my riding and I was able to get closer to the group in front.
