MotoGP Jerez: Aspar one-two as Guevara takes pole in Moto3

Gaviota GasGas Aspar continued its impressive 2022 Moto3 season by heading the Moto3 Spanish GP grid at Jerez.

Izan Guevara’s 1’45.880 solo lap bettered teammate Sergio Garcia by 0.124s on Saturday afternoon with KTM Ajo’s Jaume Masia completing the front row for the Red Bull titled event. While Scott Ogden promoted the VisionTrack Honda from Q1 on his way to an 11th place start for Sunday’s 22-lap race.

CIP Green Power’s Kaito Toba kicked off qualifying action for the Spanish GP as he set the 1’47.230 benchmark for the lightweight class Q1 fight. CFMoto’s Xavi Artigas and Ogden bettering with their third laps of the afternoon as the VisionTrack rider took charge on 1’46 pace. KTM’s Daniel Holgado held the final promotion place as the final five minutes fired up with Leopard’s Tatsuki Suzuki just 0.003s adrift ahead of the final runs.

The pack played the waiting game as the clock counted down until the penultimate minute saw 13 riders head out en masse, Avintia’s Matteo Bertelle the sole rider choosing to do it alone. The strategy saw riders meeting the flag before setting a fast lap with Ogden and Artigas two of the five caught out ahead of an anxious wait.

A crash for Syarifuddin Azman cut his effort short with Toba’s 1’46.8 taking control overall. The previous leading duo lucky to hold fast inside the Q2 places, in second and fourth as Bertelle’s solo run paid dividends for third.

Garcia set the pace for the pole shootout with an impressive early 1’46.004. Sterilgarda’s Ayumu Sasaki circulating second, three-tenths back, with Guevara on the provisional front row. Sic58’s Riccardo Rossi bickered with Masia for the third place position next time around as Ogden held onto the top ten with his first flying effort.
