MotoGP bans front ride-height devices from 2023

The Grand Prix Commission has announced front ride-height devices will be forbidden from use in the MotoGP class from 2023.

While rear and single-use holeshot devices, used at the start of races, are still acceptable, the technology allowing repeated adaptation during the race for the front ride height, as seen on the 2022 Ducati’s will no longer be admissible. The decision comes after protests from the remaining manufacturers and expressed openly by Yamaha’s Lin Jarvis, with both increasing top speed and spiralling costs a factor of concern.

“During the meeting of the Commission held in Lusail on 4 March 2022, the Grand Prix Commission delegates were asked to consider two alternative proposals on this matter,” an FIM statement published on Tuesday 22 March.

“Both had the objective of preventing further performance improvements and development cost increases. After consideration of the proposals the following regulation was approved unanimously.

“The use of any device that modifies or adjusts the motorcycle’s front ride height while it is moving is forbidden.

“The decision of the Technical Director will be final when determining what constitutes a front ride height device; devices that only operate one-shot at the race start (i.e. “holeshot” devices) are allowed.”
