Motherwell to face Morton for EIGHTH time in 13 years as fans groan at Scottish Cup draw
Motherwell have been paired with familiar foes Greenock Morton in the Scottish Cup – with the sides set to meet for the EIGHTH time in 13 years.
The Steelmen booked their place in the fifth round of the competition on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Alloa Athletic, and they have been rewarded with a trip to Cappielow to face Dougie Imrie’s men next month.
It is a familiar pairing that has had both sets of fans groaning about the draw after it was made last night.
Reacting to the draw, one Motherwell fan on X posted: "Death, taxes and Morton in the cup."

The sides were paired together in the fourth round of the competition as recently as 2022, when Motherwell required extra-time to edge past their rivals 2-1. All the goals came in the additional period with Morton taking the lead through Robbie Muirhead before a 11th minute Kevin van Veen penalty and a stoppage-time winner from Liam Donnelly spared Motherwell's blushes.
A year prior to that in 2021, the teams faced each other in the group stages of the League Cup with Well winning a bonus point in a penalty shootout after the game had finished 1-1 over 90 minutes.
There were 4-0 wins at Fir Park in the League Cup group stages in both 2019 and 2017, while Morton sprung an upset in 2015 with a 3-2 victory at Cappielow after extra-time. Scott McDonald had struck in the dying moments to take Well into the additional period.
Back in 2012, the Steelmen were emphatic 6-0 winners on home turf in the Scottish Cup and in
