Motherwell fans don't want to hear me talk, they want to see me play well, says captain

Motherwell captain Liam Kelly knows fans don’t want to hear any more promises, and says it’s time to deliver on the pitch, starting tonight against St Mirren.

Kelly says the players were well aware that the consequences of their poor performances was likely to be boss Steven Hammell leaving, even before it was announced by the club on Saturday night, following the 3-1 Scottish Cup fifth round defeat at Raith Rovers.

The goalkeeper says fans don’t want to hear them saying this or that, but to start performing better.

He said: “It’s easy for me to say it’s going to be this, or it’s going to be that. I don’t think people really want me to say anything, I just think they want me to deliver on the pitch.

“I know it has been difficult. I know loads of us as players haven’t been playing well enough.

“I know they don’t want to hear me saying this or that – they’ll say it’s easy for me to talk, and I understand all that, but I think the fans just want me to deliver on the pitch.

“The last few days have been really difficult, especially the result, first and foremost, which we’re aware wasn’t anywhere near good enough.

“The result of that was the manager leaving, so there’s a massive disappointment there.

“We obviously feel the responsibility that we’ve caused that, which is never nice.

“But come Wednesday night, St Mirren aren’t going to be feeling sorry for us, so we need to be ready to go again.

“We need to make sure we’re ready, or as best prepared as we can possibly be, because we know St Mirren will be.

“This might be the most important three points during the season.

“We might stay in the league by three points, we might go higher up by three points, so these are going to be massive, and they’re up for grabs.”
