Motherwell boss: My side battled until the final whistle and could have won against Hibs

Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell thought his side had forced a last-gasp winner against Hibs as they tried to force a top six Premiership finish.

Kettlewell thought Oli Shaw had won the game for them in the last minute of stoppage time, and praised his side for battling until the final whistle.

The former Hibs striker sent an effort inches past the right post, shortly after Shane Blaney had levelled for Motherwell to cancel out Myziane Maolida’s penalty strike.

As it happened, Dundee drawing with Aberdeen sealed the final place anyway, but Kettlewell was full of praise nonetheless.

He said: “I did think we had won it.

“Probably no surprise to myself or anybody else that, because we’ve been renowned for playing until the very last whistle.

“We want to be ahead, but we get the rally, we have four strikers and two other attackers on the pitch, so it was all-out attack.

“We tried to get the ball into their penalty box, and see if something falls for us.

“If I’m being brutally honest, there was no real great flow to the game from either side, the conditions were really challenging, even 10-yard passes, the wind was taking the ball away.

“But it got to that point where you have to throw caution to the wind and try to get the ball forward and put Hibs under pressure.

“I think they actually dealt with that pretty well at times, there were a couple of good crosses into their box.

“But when Shane Blaney comes up with that moment of brilliance, you think, and there was 40 seconds left, we did have one more chance through Oli Shaw, and thinking he had hit the back of the net was my gut instinct, when he gets across the front post.”
