Morton v Airdrie: Diamonds believe they can claw back gap and always have, insists Watson

Airdrie defender Craig Watson insists they have always been confident they can claw back the gap at the bottom of the Championship and hopes they can make it three league wins on the bounce this weekend.

The Diamonds head to Morton on Saturday hoping to trim the nine point deficit from Watson’s old side Hamilton Accies at the foot of the table, as they cling on to hope of a great escape.

Following 19 games without a win, Airdrie defeated Dunfermline and Queen’s Park to spark a comeback bid but Watson insists the squad believe - and always have believed - they can turn things around.

He said: “The win the other week over Queen’s Park was massive for us.

“There’s always been confidence - not arrogance - within the group. We know from last season and reaching the play-offs how well we can play, but there has been a big changeover in the squad and injuries and that has made it difficult.

“But it has never crossed our minds to give up or accept anything, so it is great to see everyone in it together and clawing back that gap at the bottom of the table.

“It’s two wins in a row now. We’re showing glimpses on the ball of what we are capable of and I think everyone, including myself, is really impressed with what we are doing off the ball right now.

“The past couple of games we’ve shown a real hunger and desire to win the ball back, fight as a team.

“I’m not saying that hasn’t been there all season because we have been unfortunate at times, but it’s good to see that coming back into play.

“All we can affect is ourselves and as long as we can keep doing what we’ve done in the last few league games, hopefully we can keep closing that gap.

“We are not going to look at individual teams and who is on what points.”
