Morrisons issues apology about its meat and chicken after angry shopper's photo goes viral

Supermarrket giant Morrisons has issued an apology to anyone who shops in its supermarkets. The retailer was forced to respond after an angry shopper's photograph went viral.

Posting on social media, one shopper shared pictures of empty shelves in their local Morrisons supermarket in Hull . Shelves were left empty over the weekend as Morrisons suffered shortages on some of its most popular products - including meat, poultry and lettuce.

A disgruntled customer affected by the shortages told Hull Live : "You'd expect the big supermarkets to have this sort of stuff in stock. It's worrying that they can't even get the basics like salad and chicken in. It's not the end of the world but when you're turning to frozen and tinned items instead it really says something about where we're going. Whatever the issue is it needs sorting."

Customer information notices were placed around the affected store in Holderness Road, Hull, which said: "Due to disruptions within our supply chain, we are seeing low availability on lettuce. Apologies for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding."

The Ukraine war and a number of other crises, including flooding in Spain, have raised fears of food shortages. Last month the government reassured the public that action was being taken to reduce the impact on food supply chains caused by the Ukraine crisis.

The country was one of the largest exporters of wheat to the world prior to the conflict. Co-op's boss also commented on the chain's difficulties in sourcing lettuce, as well as vegetable oil and rapeseed oil.
