Morgan Gibbs-White has perfect opportunity for £100m Man City transfer audition at Wembley

It has been deemed the impossible task in certain quarters but it is one of the most important first challenges facing Man City's new sporting director Hugo Viana this summer - just how do you replace Kevin De Bruyne?

The Belgium international announced earlier this month he will be leaving City when his contract expires at the end of the current campaign after 10 trophy-laden years.

De Bruyne has won everything there is to win at City and he will leave the Etihad Stadium, arguably, as City's greatest ever player.

The debates have already started over whether he will go down as the Premier League's greatest ever midfielder and the task now for City is how they move on and evolve in the post-De Bruyne era.

It is a decision they have to nail in this summer's transfer market and whoever does arrive at the club must have the personality to shoulder the creative burden left behind by the 33-year-old.

Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz is a player that has been discussed, with the German international considered the catalyst behind their incredible season last term which ended in an historic unbeaten domestic double.

The risk with Wirtz, of course, is how long it would take for the 21-year-old to adapt to English football and City are also set to face competition from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid for his signature.

However, Morgan Gibbs-White wouldn't require such an adaptation period and he is considered the alternative option City are pondering over in their pursuit to replace De Bruyne.

The 25-year-old has been outstanding for Nottingham Forest this season, with his five goals and nine assists helping the Reds launch an unlikely bid to qualify for next season's Champions League.
