"More advanced than Callum Wilson" - Keith Downie now drops injury update on 35-cap star

Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier is ahead of Callum Wilson in their respective comebacks from injury, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The 35-cap England international hasn’t played for more than two months, but he is hopeful of returning before the end of the season.

It’s been a frustrating few months for the England right-back, who’s still recovering from a fractured foot he suffered in his fifth game for the club against Aston Villa back in February.

But Trippier is no longer wearing a protective boot and is close to making a full return to training.

Ahead of Sunday’s victory over Leicester, Eddie Howe was asked about Trippier’s condition and said that he is back on the grass and running once again following more than two months out.

He said: “Kieran I think is very slightly ahead of schedule. He is beginning to run on the grass again with his boots on. That is a great sign for us. He still has to now build up his fitness and everything that comes with that.”

Howe also revealed that Wilson has started some minor shooting drills on the training pitch, but Downie reckons that Trippier is further along his recovery than the frontman.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s certainly more advanced than Callum Wilson is. Obviously they’re different injuries.

“I’m not sure it was a setback with Callum Wilson, I think it was always from the start that he was going to return towards the end of the season.”
