Callum Wilson Newcastle United's transfer warning as the striker calls for patience

Callum Wilson does not want Newcastle United to buy new players just for the sake of it this summer. In January, the new Saudi-backed regime splashed out £90million on new arrivals to help steer the club away from relegation.

All five players have had an impact on the Magpies’ survival, with all - barring Bruno Guimaraes - previously tried and tested in the Premier League. Another summer of lavish spending is expected on Tyneside and supporters are already in dreamland now top-flight safety is secured.

However, the current number nine - who has been sidelined with a torn calf since December - is calling for expectations around St James’ Park to simmer. “The new players that are going to come in need time to settle in to get their feet on the ground,” Wilson told the Footballer’s Football podcast.

“There's going to be players in the current squad that have not played (and) are going to want to move. That's football. You don't want to build too quickly. With financial fair play, I don’t think we have as much to pump into the club as everybody thinks. It’s about having a strategy but I don’t want to talk on that side of things.

“You want to keep evolving as a squad, but ultimately, you don't want to just buy players for the sake (of it) because you've got money. You might not bring in the right players. You might bring in bad characters. You can bring in a player who's meant to be a world-beater, it gets in the dressing room and upsets it. It’s about having a strategy in place.”
