Monaco GP: Lewis Hamilton cleared to race as jewellery rules are pushed back

Lewis Hamilton is free to race in the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend after the FIA decided that they’d push back implementing rules over jewellery until the British Grand Prix at the start of July.

Hamilton is well-known for his jewellery and though other drivers also wear items like necklaces, it is Lewis who is perhaps the driver you think of most when it comes to piercings and things like that.

However, he has been at risk of falling foul of a clampdown from the FIA who have said that piercings and jewellery should not be worn during any session, as a matter of safety.

Hamilton, though, has been among the drivers to suggest such a ruling is not needed, especially when it’s not really been mentioned before, and that he should decide whether he feels safe enough wearing things like his nose piercing during a Grand Prix.

There had been suggestions, too, that from Monaco the rules were going to get tougher and that might even threaten to see some drivers fined, receive penalty points on their licence or even not allowed to race but, now, there has been a pushing back of the deadline.

Indeed, the FIA is set to reword its regulations around the matter to make it clearer as to what is and isn’t allowed, and will then seek to implement things from June 30, with the British Grand Prix being held later that weekend at Silverstone.

For now, then, Hamilton and co. can drive unpunished wearing jewellery but it remains to be seen what happens around this issue come the time of his home race.
