Monaco GP: Charles Leclerc seals pole at home Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc will start his home Grand Prix from pole position after producing a stellar performance in the Ferrari around the streets of Monaco.

The Scuderia driver has looked very strong indeed this weekend, as he did in Spain last time out, and he’s topped all but one of the sessions.

He’ll know, though, that it’s not over until the chequered flag, especially given the fact he’s had rotten luck in Monaco in the past and with the retirement in Spain still fresh in his mind.

It was, though, Leclerc’s day with title rival Max Verstappen down in 4th place for tomorrow’s race. Here’s how it all played out in qualifying…

Q1

A late red flag scuppered a few drivers’ laps with it being flown seemingly by mistake after a marshal fluttered a manual flag before the button was hit for the lights around the circuit.

Indeed, it hurt Pierre Gasly particularly badly with the Frenchman, regularly in the top ten throughout practice, being eliminated at the first hurdle.

He’ll start in P17 behind Alex Albon in P16, whilst Lance Stroll, Nicholas Latifi and Guanyu Zhou will round off the back of the grid.

Q2

No red flags in Q2 but no less disappointment for Daniel Ricciardo, who once again fell at the second hurdle.

The McLaren man saw Zak Brown say his time has not lived up to expectations so far with the team earlier in the week and this won’t do him any favours, with a long race ahead of him from P14, one spot ahead of Mick Schumacher.

Ahead of them, Yuki Tsunoda will line up in 11th place ahead of Valtteri Bottas, whilst Kevin Magnussen will start the Grand Prix from 13th.

Q3

In front of his home crowd, though, it was Leclerc who took pole as those behind him fell foul of Sergio Perez’s late incident.
