Mohamed Salah insists he is the best player in his position in the world - and believes his astonishing Liverpool record backs up his claim.

The 2022 Football Writers’ Men’s Footballer of the Year has smashed 30 goals in 48 appearances this season for Liverpool. He is also leading the race for the Premier League Golden Boot with 22 goals so far this season. The 29-year-old believes those numbers - along with his performances - rank him ahead of any other player in his position, including team-mates Diogo Jota, Luiz Diaz and Sadio Mane.

"If you compare me with any player in my position, not only in my team but in the world, you will find that I am the best,” he said. “I always focus on my work and do my best and my numbers are the best proof of my words.

"I like to always create a new challenge for me, to work in a different way and to make a difference and that is my duty.”

Speaking earlier this season, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said on current form, his talisman stood above the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who have won 12 of the last 13 Ballon d'Ors. "He is top. We all see it," the German said after beating Watford in September.

"Who is better than him? We don't have to talk about what Messi and Ronaldo have done for world football and their dominance. But right now, he is the best."
