MLS' Timbers, NWSL's Thorns' 'PTFC For Peace' game raises north of $500,000 US for Ukraine relief
The final score didn't matter in the end.
Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers and the Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League joined forces to play a charity match Wednesday night to benefit relief efforts in Ukraine.
The two teams raised more than $500,000 US from the game, dubbed PTFC For Peace, which go to UNICEF. The two clubs matched donations up to $100,000, and additional funds will come from an auction of jerseys and other merchandise.
"This just goes to show that this city is special and the fans here are incredible," said Thorns captain Christine Sinclair. "To be out there playing a game that's bigger than yourself, bigger than your team, it's incredible. Hopefully we're going to help change some people's lives."
