Mitchell van der Gaag to join Manchester United as assistant 25 years after leaving Motherwell

A former Motherwell star is set to join the Old Trafford revolution as Manchester United attempt to haul themselves out of an almight mess.

The ailing English Premier League giants have appointed Erik ten Hag as their new manager with ex-Fir Park defender Mitchell van der Gaag making to move to Manchester alongside him at the end of the season.

Dutchman Van der Gaag arrived in Lanarkshire back in January 1995.

The centre half spent two years at Motherwell, scoring a career-best seven goals in 28 games during his second full season at the club – not bad for a central defender.

That season, he helped the Steelmen narrowly avoid relegation from the Scottish Premier Division.

In 1997, der Gaag departed Motherwell when he signed for Dutch side FC Utrecht.

The player turned coach nearly made a return to Fir Park as he was an option to replace boss Stuart McCall back in 2014.

However, Motherwell opted for Ian Baraclough instead with van der Haag joining Ermis in Cyrprus.

He also had spells in charge of Maritimo and Belenenses in Portugal and Eindhoven, Exelsior and NAC in Holland before joining Ajax.
