Misano WorldSBK: Vierge set for Thursday surgery

Honda’s Xavi Vierge will undergo surgery on Thursday following a turn 11 crash in Sunday’s final WorldSBK race at Misano.

Having completed extensive examinations on Monday, carried out by Dr. Xavier Mir at the Universitario Quirón Dexeus Hospital in Barcelona, Spain, Vierge was confirmed to have six fractures to his right hand, two of which require surgery. The two bones in question are the third metacarpal bone and the hamate bone, which will be operated on by Dr. Mir and his team on Thursday.

The delay on surgery is to fully ensure the 25-year-old former Moto2 rider is free from concussion or complications resulting form the blow to the head sustained in the lap 12 incident with Ducati rider Axel Bassani.

“We have some news,” Vierge explained on Monday afternoon via social media. “First of all I want to thank you for the messages you all send me and also I want to explain a bit crash because I receive many questions about it.

“Was in turn 11, Bassani tried to overtake myself and we are unlucky that our wheels touches - his rear wheel with my front wheel. So my bike goes there directly to the wall and I need to jump off of the bike.

“With six broken bones in my right hand, two of them are a bit difficult so I will undergo surgery next Thursday with Dr. Xavi Mir and his team, to start the recovery as soon as possible,” he confirmed before thanking again the fans for their support.
