Mikey Johnston WINS top Championship award as Celtic star's stunning West Brom rise hits new heights

Mikey Johnston has been named Championship player of the month for March after a stunning start to life at West Brom.

The Ireland winger is still contracted at Celtic but has played arguably the best football of his career since leaving the Hoops on loan. He's looked like a new player with seven goals in 14 games and will return to Parkhead in the summer as potentially a far more valuable asset than when he left.

Last month he scored in three successive games, firing in four in five games as Albion strengthened their charge towards the playoffs. On Thursday he was announced alongside former Hearts striker Ellis Simms on the player of the month shortlist. Ipswich's Leif Davis and Norwich's Gabriel Sara were also on the list but it has now been announced that Johnston has won it after establishing himself as one of West Brom's key players.

He'll take on Sunderland, Leicester, Sheffield Wednesday and Preston in a blockbuster finish to the season with the playoffs afterwards looking highly likely. That means a potential promotion to the Premier League is on the cards for Johnston.

“I’m absolutely delighted to win this individual award, but I’d like to give credit to my team-mates and the manager here. Everyone was so quick to welcome me. That then allowed me to hit the ground running and thankfully I’ve been able to put in some decent performances and score a few goals.”
