Mikey Johnston shows Celtic what they still have as he earns 'mini Messi' nickname in Portugal

Mikey Johnston's first brace since leaving Celtic on loan has brought plenty of attention to him - and a lofty comparison to one of the world's greatest players.

The winger is highly-rated by Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou but after signing a new contract until 2026 at the end of the summer transfer window, he was immediately shipped out to Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimares for regular minutes. His big moment so far at the Liga Nos club came in the Taca De Portugal over the weekend as he netted twice in the first half during a 3-1 win against lower league outfit Canelas 2010.

His maiden strike was a solo run started in his own half and it's led teammate Tiago Silva to pose the question " Mini Messi, is that you?'" in a big nod to PSG superstar Lionel Messi. Rubern Lameiras also predicted that it's the 'first/second of many' for the Celtic loanee.

Portuguese reports have also been flattering in their praise, Record headlining Johnston's contributions in the cup 'Mini Messi takes shape' after claiming the best goals per game and minutes average of the squad.

Jornaldo Luxemburgo state Johnston "ended up resolving the match in the first half" and Mais Guimaraes say the 23-year-old looks "to be a quality solution for the 2022/2023 season."

It's been a rough couple of years with injury for the former Scotland youth international but he's now beginning to find his feet abroad and faces Boavista this weekend.
