Mikael Lustig to retire as Celtic Invincible reveals when he will hang up his boots

Celtic hero Mikael Lustig has announced that he will hang up his boots at the end of the season.

The Sweden international will call time on his career at the end of the current Allsvenskan season with AIK Stockholm. The Swedish top flight campaign reaches its conclusion next month and the 35-year-old will play his final game on November 6 at home to IF Elfsborg, bringing his 18-year career to an end.

Lustig joined Celtic from Rosenberg in Norway ten years ago and lifted eight Scottish Premiership titles, four Scottish Cups and four League cups during his eight years at Parkhead. He played under Neil Lennon, Ronny Deila and Brendan Rodgers, starting for the latter at right back during Celtic’s invincible season.

In a statement released by AIK this morning, Lutsig said: “Thank you AIK Football. Immediately when I arrived at AIK, I felt warmly welcomed by everyone. It has been a great honour for me to play in AIK and I will remember this time in my life for a long time to come. I want to say a big thank you to the supporters, the staff at Karlberg, my fellow players and everyone else I have met over the years at the club. Now we're running into the tile, five games remain and the first is a derby on Sunday.”

Sweden captain Janne Andersson also paid tribute, added: "Micke has been a key player during all the years that I have been national team captain. A very wise player with a great understanding of the game. His commitment, routine, warmth and humour have to a great extent contributed to the fact that we had such good cohesion in the squad."
