Midfielder completes League One transfer after Birmingham City departure

Former Birmingham City midfielder Adam Clayton has found himself a new club in League One with Doncaster Rovers.

Clayton, 33, mutually agreed to leave Blues in November of last year more than six months before the expiry of his contract when it became apparent that he’d have no part to play under Lee Bowyer.

The midfielder had arrived under former Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka in the summer before last, but that stay was cut short quickly at the end of 2021 and Clayton was free to find himself a new club as a free agent.

“The club has reached an agreement with Adam Clayton to mutually terminate his contract,” the club statement read at the time of the announcement.

“Adam went on to make 16 appearances in all competitions during the 2020/21 season.

“Despite the midfielder having a period of time remaining on his existing contract, both parties have agreed to conclude his time at the club effective immediately.

“Blues would like to wish Adam all the best in his future career.”

That has begun with Clayton signing a two-year deal with Donny in League One, a side managed by former Blues winger Gary McSheffrey.

Former Manchester City trainee Clayton also had spells with Leeds United and Huddersfield before going on to represent Boro and Blues.

He has played more than 450 matches in his professional career to date.
