Middlesbrough 1-0 Swansea City: Fry header sees off toothless Swans as Cabango limps off

Plenty has changed at Swansea City in the last 12 months.

A new manager, a new ownership group, two celebrity investors, and a clutch of new signings.

But while much of the cast has changed, many Swans fans might well feel they've seen this movie before.

A City side still short on bodies puffing their way through a sunny, disappointing opening day on Teesside certainly feels eerily familiar.

As was the case nearly a year ago to the day, concerns around the depth of this squad abound for Swansea, who produced a toothless display in the north-east.

That's not to do down their endeavour, mind. Indeed, they competed reasonably well for much of the afternoon. But Middlesbrough clearly enjoyed the better of proceedings.

Former Swansea striker Morgan Whittaker saw a rasping effort turned onto the crossbar by Lawrence Vigouroux, in the best opening of a tightly-contested first half.

But when Dael Fry headed home the only goal of the game just after the restart, Swansea never really looked like hauling themselves back in it.

Even the joy of seeing Ben Cabango in the starting line-up didn't last the afternoon; the captain forced off late in the second half to compound a frustrating afternoon.

Swansea scored the same number of goals as relegated Plymouth Argyle last season, and the lack of attacking bite here will arguably be the biggest disappointment.

In fairness, chances were few and far between for either side during a largely attritional first half. Hayden Hackney flashed an effort wide for the hosts, while Goncalo Franco's effort was charged down by a red shirt at the other end.
