Mickey Harte confirmed as new Derry senior football manager

Mickey Harte has been confirmed as the new manager of the Derry senior football team following a meeting of the county board this evening.

Harte, who won three All-Ireland titles as manager of his native Tyrone, spent the last three seasons with Louth taking them from Division 4 of the Allianz Football League up to Division 2, while also guiding the Wee County the the Leinster final last summer.

He was expected to remain in charge on the east coast until last night's shock announcement that he had resigned.

"Following Tuesday night's meeting of Coiste Chontae Dhoire, Derry GAA are pleased to announce the senior football management team for the incoming year," the Derry County Board said in a statement.

"Multiple All-Ireland winning manager Mickey Harte has been appointed on a three-year term, and will lead a management team including Gavin Devlin. Further details about the backroom team will be confirmed in due course.

"We wish both the management team and playing panel every success for the 2024 season."

The Oak Leaf County have made big progress in the last few seasons. They've claimed back to back Ulster SFC titles, as well as moving from Division 4 of the league in 2019 to Division 1 for next season.

They also competed in successive All-Ireland semi-finals, losing to Galway in 2022 and Kerry this year.

Former manager Rory Gallagher resigned in May after his ex-wife Nicola made allegations of domestic abuse in a social media post.

He was replaced by interim manager Ciarán Meenagh, who recently told the county board that he would not be seeking the job for the 2024 season.
