Michael Owen tells Manchester United why they need to sign Jude Bellingham before Liverpool FC

Michael Owen has explained why Manchester United need to pip Liverpool to the signing of Jude Bellingham.

Jurgen Klopp's side are the current favourites to sign the talented 18-year-old this summer. However, Borussia Dortmund are thought to be unwilling to let the Englishman go after losing Erling Haaland to Manchester City.

Erik ten Hag has outlined midfield as the key area for improvement in this transfer window with Frenkie de Jong his number one target. However, speaking on Channel 4's coverage of the Nations League, Owen raved about the former Birmingham City man and hinted at why United should sign him.

He said: "I do (think he can be a starter in Qatar), Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice have almost been two sitting midfielders in some of the tougher games whereas I think this guy is more adventurous, a better passer, he can score a few more goals. Talk about exciting players, only 18, he’s got the physique, the quality, he’s got everything and we could be looking at a mainstay for many years and one of the best out there if he develops."

Bellingham is quickly becoming a regular in the England team with Gareth Southgate putting faith in the teenager. The 18-year-old has three years remaining on his contract in Germany.
