Michael Oliver will referee Sunday's Manchester Derby to spark memories of arguably Pep Guardiola's most infamous moment as a Premier League manager.

Two-and-a-half years ago, Guardiola marched onto the Anfield pitch following Manchester City's controversial 3-1 loss to Liverpool and confronted Olivier over a number of major decisions that went against his side.

With his sarcasm as profound as his outrage, the City boss told the highly-rated official during their awkward handshake: "Thank you so much."

Guardiola's club then wrote to the refereeing chief Mike Riley about events in the match, citing "inconsistencies" after three separate incidents left the Spanish tactician incensed on the touchline.

The first was as early as the sixth minute when the ball struck Trent Alexander-Arnold's arm in the box but Oliver did not award a penalty.

Within 60 seconds, Liverpool scored their opener and a subsequent VAR review took place, although the decision was not overturned and the Reds' goal stood.

The second incident came in the second half when Raheem Sterling went down in the penalty area after contact with Sadio Mane, while the third was for another handball incident, again involving Alexander-Arnold.

The Times reported that Riley responded to the letter and held 'constructive talks' with City.
