Michael O'Neill sets Stoke City transfer objective following Hearts defeat

Stoke City boss Michael O'Neill says the club are "actively looking" to make two more signings in the summer transfer window following a preseason defeat to Hearts.

Tyrese Campbell scored either side of a Lawrence Shankland brace as the Potters lost 2-1 at Tynecastle in their final game before the Championship restarts. It means they won just one of their five friendlies this past month.

Two new signings made their debut on Saturday, with Dwight Gayle and Will Smallbone coming off the bench on the hour mark. O'Neill was happy with their contribution despite the defeat.

"Yeah I think (it will do them good), we only got them in," the Northern Irishman said after the game. "Gayle was able to train with us on Friday. Smallbone was not able to train.

"We got the paperwork done on Friday. I think both showed up well when they came into the game."

Although City have been very busy in this window and signed seven new players, O'Neill revealed that they intend on bringing at least one, if not two new faces into the fold as the new season approaches.

"We're constantly trying to add to the squad," he said. "We have had a lot of younger players around it for a bit longer in preseason than we would have liked.

"That affects it a little bit, but the players we've brought in will add quality to the squad. They've shown that already and we're still actively looking for players in possibly one or two positions."
