Metrolink line blocked after crash between tram and car

Metrolink services were temporarily blocked on the Ashton line last night (Friday) after a car collided with a tram in Audenshaw.

Three fire engines, along with a Technical Response Unit, were called to attend the collision near the tram lines on Droylsden Road shortly after 5pm on Friday (June 24). Crews from Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service were also in attendance.

A woman was treated at the scene but did not require hospital treatment. As a result of the crash, Metrolink services on the Ashton line were reduced for close to an hour whilst firefighters cleared the scene.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At shortly after 5pm on Friday (23 June), three fire engines from Philips Park and Gorton fire stations, along with the Technical Response Unit from Ashton-under-Lyne, were called to attend a road traffic collision involving a car and a tram on Droylsden Road, Audenshaw.

“Crews arrived quickly and worked alongside Metrolink, Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service, who assessed one female casualty at the scene.

“Firefighters made the area safe before departing after approximately 45 minutes in attendance.”

A Metrolink spokesperson confirmed the incident took place at around 4.55pm. The spokesperson said: “Tram services continued to run between Velopark and Piccadilly, and Metrolink tickets and passes were accepted on local buses along the affected part of the route. Full tram services resumed with minor delays at 6pm.”

The Ashton line is closed today for previously planned improvement works.
