Met Police 'undertaking further enquiries' after meeting the BBC about unnamed presenter allegations

Police are carrying out further inquiries to establish whether any crime has been committed following allegations that a BBC presenter paid a teenager tens of thousands of pounds for sexually explicit images. Representatives for the broadcaster met with detectives on Monday morning (July 10).

They are assessing the information discussed at the meeting but have not yet launched an investigation, according to the PA news agency. A male member of BBC staff has been suspended following claims that he paid a young person around £35,000 over three years, from the age of 17, for explicit images.

The Sun reported on Monday that the presenter had made “panicked” calls to the person last week after the allegations became known. The corporation has said it has been investigating a complaint since May when it was first made aware, and that new allegations of a "different nature" were brought to it on Thursday.

A Met statement said: “Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command met with representatives from the BBC on the morning of Monday, 10 July. The meeting took place virtually. They are assessing the information discussed at the meeting and further enquiries are taking place to establish whether there is evidence of a criminal offence being committed.

“There is no investigation at this time."

The BBC confirmed the unnamed presenter had been suspended on Sunday afternoon. A statement from the broadcaster said: "The BBC takes any allegations seriously and we have robust internal processes in place to proactively deal with such allegations.
