Met Office weather forecast as Storm Gladys could hit UK this week

Greater Manchester has been hit by extreme weather in recent days after three storms battered the country.

Storm Dudley, Storm Eunice and most notably Storm Franklin brought gale force winds and persistent heavy rain to the region and most parts of the UK.

Several weather warnings were in place from Friday, with two 'danger to life' severe flood warnings issued for the River Mersey in south Manchester as the worst of Storm Franklin hit.

People in parts of the south of England and Wales were also told not to leave their homes as rare red warnings for wind were issued.

Though all Met Office weather warnings have now been lifted, forecasters have warned that more could be issued for the UK later this week.

They added that more wind and heavy rain is expected across the north and west of England, with the potential for snow or sleet to hit some areas.

Windy conditions are forecast for much for the UK on Thursday - which could end up being named Storm Gladys.

Although the name of the next storm has already been decided, it is too early for forecasters to tell whether it will develop this week.

The Met Office also added that the risk of further impacts from extreme weather 'is lower than we have seen in recent days'.

In the North West, weather conditions will remain unsettled today with some heavy rain showers forecast for Greater Manchester.

There may be some sunshine this afternoon and scattered blustery showers.

Tomorrow, there could be some more outbreaks of rain, especially over higher grounds, with winds strengthening through the day.
